Social Networking & Our Kids

Is social networking a bad thing for kids? Lately I have been hearing that the future generations will have a different way of communicating with one another because of all the social media, and after hearing so much talk of this subject, I decided to look it up and read a little more about it.

I think that social media is a great tool to have, and I think  it can keep you in touch with a family member even if they are 3,000 miles away.  I can just use my iPhone press a few buttons and I am able to tell them what has been going on in my life all by the click of a send button.  With children using social media all the time as they grow up their communication skills could decrease, and the way kids interact one with another face to face may be a little more intimidating rather than communicating through buttons and a screen.  With the widespread use of Facebook and Twitter I have noticed some changes in my family, and the new things that keep them busy. For example every time I see my teenage brother or sister it is hard to get a word in with them because their eyes are glued to their phones, or their computers, they just always seem too busy to talk, “hold on one second let me get this notification out”.  I love social media, but I don’t know how I feel about it for children and teens. When I have kids I want to be able to talk to them, and not have to receive a message from across the dinner table asking me if I could please pass the butter.

This article on social networking is about, a few national stars MC Hammer, early rap artist, Chris Kelly, Facebook’s Chief Privacy officer, and John Salley, a four time winner of the NBA Championships, who talk about the social media from each of their points of view being a good thing or bad thing for kids.  Is social media a bad thing for kids, I guess we will see the results in the near future.
